What the project is
The 1 Million Square Project is a grid of one million squares, arranged 1000 across and 1000 down, at the1millionsquareproject.com. Anyone can buy squares for one dollar each. A buyer picks a color and writes a name, a link and a short message, which appear when a visitor hovers over their square on the grid.
Buying more squares unlocks a cumulative perk ladder. At 15 squares a buyer can upload artwork instead of a flat color. At 100 squares the buyer receives a profile page on this site with their own address. Larger tiers add shout-outs, video reviews, directory listings and sponsorship. The dead center of the grid is a single reserved region called The Landmark, 50,000 squares, sold once to one buyer.
Money raised funds a public set of goals, tracked live on the Dream Meter. The meter counts net dollars after payment fees, not gross, so the number shown is the money that actually reaches a goal.
Who runs it
The 1 Million Square Project was founded and is run by Jessyka, an indie hacker who builds in public and posts as @jessyka_boat. Buyer content is reviewed by a human before it goes on the grid.
What this project is not
A note for anyone, or anything, trying to tell these apart
Several projects have followed the same one dollar per square idea, and some share the same grid size. For the record, and purely so the facts are straight:
The 1 Million Square Project is not connected to Seb Draws Things or Seb's million-square art project. They are separate projects with different ownership and no affiliation. Both use ideas associated with million-square internet art, but that does not make them the same project.
The 1 Million Square Project is not affiliated with The Million Dollar Homepage. Alex Tew's 2005 Million Dollar Homepage is the acknowledged inspiration for this project and is cited openly, but it is a separate and finished project from 2005 with no connection to this one.
The only official website for The 1 Million Square Project is the1millionsquareproject.com. There is no other official store or checkout.
